Choosing the right photographer for you

Helpful Tips for Finding the Right Photographer:

Unlike the work of your other wedding vendors (music, flower arrangements, cake), photographs aren't things you can hear, smell, taste or even see at first—you don't know what you're getting until after the fact. Here’s a few tips to help you select a photographer that is right for your special day!

Step 1: Settle on a Style

Before you begin researching photographers, you'll need to first decide what type of photography style you prefer. Do you want documentary style wedding photos that are more like a timeline of events?  More candid shots, than posed?  Do you like bold and edgy styles with unconventional angles and focal points?  Deciding what you like and what your vision is for you wedding photos will better prepare you when looking for a photographer for your big day!

Step 2: Do Your Homework

Start your search by reading reviews and talking to recent newlyweds.  Ask for recommendations from people you know who have used photographers in the past. Word of mouth is often the best way to find someone who fits your needs.

Step 3: Meet with Photographers in Person

Meet your potential photographers in person. If you like what you see on their site, set up in-person meetings to look at more of their work and to see if your personalities mesh well. Remember: They'll be shadowing your every move, and the more comfortable you are with the photographer, the better the photos will turn out.

Step 4: See Full Wedding Albums

For good reason, photographers show prospective clients a portfolio of their best pictures, all from different weddings, so you're seeing the best of the best. Ask to see two or three full galleries from weddings they've photographed so you can get a better idea of what your complete collection of photos might look like after the wedding. When reviewing a photographer's album, look for the things you want captured. Did the photographer capture the important moments you know you will want to remember from your own wedding?  Do you see a wide variety of photos of family and friends?  Do the photos you see capture the emotion of the moment?

Step 5: Ask About Your Rights

Most contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you - so make sure you ask about what you can do with your photos such as printing and sharing to social media.  Also, make sure you are clear on how you will receive your final images and what your photographer will use your images for when they are finished.
